How a simple A/B test turned into a new generation of chess

From a Simple A/B Test to a Whole New Game Experience ♟️

It all started with a simple A/B test on Google Play  just a small experiment to see how players reacted to different designs. We were impressed by the new vibrant pieces, so, eventually, decided to test those pieces as icons. In the picture below you’ll see examples of those icons.

But the results were clear: players wanted something brighter, smoother, and more modern. And that’s how our biggest update yet was born.

A Brighter, More Modern Look

The retro vibe is officially gone! The new UI shines with clean lines, vibrant colors, and a polished layout that makes every move feel fresh. It’s not just prettier – it’s easier to play, whether you’re on a quick break or deep into a tournament.

Smarter AI and Clearer Controls

The AI button used to be confusing – now it’s a hint button, just like in the best modern games. It gives you guidance when you need it, without breaking the flow of play. Every detail now feels intuitive and player-friendly.

Level Clarity That Makes Sense

We’ve simplified and clarified the level system so you instantly understand what difficulty to pick. No more guessing – just pure focus on the next great match.

A Better Start for New Players

Starting out is smoother than ever. The new rating system helps match players more fairly, making early games feel rewarding and balanced. So, we’ve heard a lot that new players complain about the poor level of opponents and we’ve fixed it!

Online Matches With Time Limits

To keep things competitive and exciting, online games now have a move timer. It’s all about fair play and keeping the tension alive! You have just 10 minutes on your move. In case you don’t do it, you lose.

Fresh Colors, Fresh Energy 🎨

We’ve refreshed the entire color palette, giving every board and piece more life and contrast. It’s still the same chess you love — just more vibrant and dynamic.

From Test to Transformation

What began as a small Google Play A/B test has turned into a full-scale redesign that players everywhere are loving. The update not only changed how the game looks but also how it feels to play — faster, friendlier, and full of energy.
