Nepomniachtchi Crushes Carlsen in the Decisive Game of the Tournament. Ian Hasn't Looked This Happy in a Long Time!

Sometimes a single game is enough to change the mood of an entire tournament. For Ian Nepomniachtchi, that game came against Magnus Carlsen in the final of the fourth season of the Global Chess League. The Russian grandmaster did more than simply defeat one of the strongest chess players in the world — his victory came at the decisive moment of the match and helped the Ganges Grandmasters claim the first title in the team's history.

For Nepomniachtchi, the victory also carried a special personal meaning. Carlsen had remained one of Ian's most difficult opponents for many years. This time, however, it was Nepomniachtchi who put the finishing touch on the final and delivered the championship title to his team.

A Final Where There Was No Room for Error

The Global Chess League once again brought together an impressive field this year. The tournament featured Magnus Carlsen, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Levon Aronian, Anish Giri, Javokhir Sindarov, Alireza Firouzja, Viswanathan Anand and many other stars of world chess.

Alpine APL Pipers, the defending champions with Carlsen on the top board, were considered the favorites going into the final. Nepomniachtchi's Ganges Grandmasters faced an extremely difficult challenge.

The first match of the final ended in a 3–3 draw. It seemed that the title would be decided in the very last games.

And that is exactly what happened.

In the second match, Ganges Grandmasters made the decisive push and won 4–2. One of the most important victories came on the very first board.

Nepomniachtchi vs. Carlsen: A Game for the Title

The top board brought together two players whose rivalry has long gone beyond an ordinary chess matchup.

In 2021, Carlsen defeated Nepomniachtchi in their World Championship match. In 2024, the two shared the World Blitz Championship title. Their meeting in the decisive game of the Global Chess League final therefore carried an additional layer of significance.

This time, Ian had the chance to strike back at the most important possible moment.

Carlsen had the White pieces and managed to obtain a significant advantage. However, the Norwegian then decided to take a pawn, after which the position began to change rapidly. Nepomniachtchi immediately exploited the problems that had arisen and seized the initiative.

The Russian grandmaster's decision to sacrifice a bishop was particularly impressive. Objectively, the sacrifice did not produce an immediate win, but it created enormous practical problems for Carlsen. Under a fast time control, that proved to be a crucial factor.

Carlsen's position began to collapse, and Nepomniachtchi converted his attack into a victory.

From Almost Losing the Tournament to Becoming Champions

Ian's victory became a key part of the team's overall success.

Ganges Grandmasters won the second final match 4–2 and became Global Chess League champions for the first time in the team's history. For Alpine APL Pipers, it meant losing the title they had been defending this season.

The final was also decided on the women's board, where Stavroula Tsolakidou defeated Humpy Koneru to score the decisive point for Ganges. Nepomniachtchi's team therefore managed to overcome the defending champions at the most crucial moment of the final.

The opening 3–3 draw ultimately worked in Ganges' favor as well. The team entered the second match without the immediate pressure of having to recover from a deficit and was able to wait patiently for its opportunities.

Why This Victory Matters So Much for Nepomniachtchi

For Ian, this was more than just another win in a team event.

The last few years of Nepomniachtchi's career have been challenging. He played for the World Championship title twice but failed to become world champion on either occasion. The 2021 match against Carlsen was particularly painful.

That made defeating Magnus in the decisive game of a major final especially symbolic.

And Nepomniachtchi did it in a position where Carlsen had initially enjoyed good chances. Ian absorbed the pressure, waited for his opponent to make an inaccuracy, and then turned his initiative into a full point.

This is more than just a result on the tournament table. It is evidence that Nepomniachtchi can remain composed when the stakes are at their highest and a single mistake can decide everything.

Nepomniachtchi Is Back on the Rise

Another important detail was Ian's individual performance. According to Championat, he moved up to second place in the rapid rankings after the tournament. Polina Shuvalova also finished the event with an excellent individual score of 7 points out of 10.

But the defining image of the tournament for Nepomniachtchi was the photograph taken after the final.

During the awards ceremony, Ian looked genuinely happy. And it is easy to understand why: his team had won the title, he had defeated Carlsen in the decisive game, and the final had ended in the most dramatic way possible.

For Ganges Grandmasters, it was a historic championship. For Carlsen, it was another final in which his team failed to retain the title. And for Nepomniachtchi, it may well have been one of the most emotional victories of his career in recent years.

A Beautiful Revenge for Ian

In chess, it is rare to get the chance to write such a perfect script.

First, Carlsen gained the advantage. Then Nepomniachtchi found practical resources, unleashed a powerful tactical idea and turned the game around. In the end, his victory became one of the main reasons Ganges Grandmasters lifted the championship trophy.

Ian has rarely looked this happy after a major tournament — and this time, he had every reason to smile.

Nepomniachtchi did not simply beat Carlsen. He did it when the victory mattered most.
