FIDE World Cup 2027: Qualification spots announced following the Olympiad
From Samarkand to the World Cup: FIDE Announces Olympiad Qualification Places for 2027
At the Chess Olympiad, every result matters to the team. Sometimes, though, its full significance becomes clear only after the tournament ends: points earned can open the door to another major event. For many federations, the competition in Samarkand has now done exactly that.

On October 16, FIDE announced the allocation of places for the 2027 World Cup and Women’s World Cup based on the Olympiad results. National federations must now decide who will take up those places.
How Many Federations Earned Places?
Olympiad qualification places were awarded to 83 federations in the Open section and 45 in the Women’s section.
Uzbekistan, India, Germany, the United States, Azerbaijan and Armenia are among the federations that secured Open places. The Women’s list includes China, Kazakhstan, India, the United States, Poland and Georgia. Ukraine earned places in both sections.
Behind these lists lies an important connection: a team performance creates an individual opportunity. For a player, representing their country at the Olympiad can mark the beginning of a journey that continues at an individual tournament.
Why Were Some Places Reallocated?
Before the Olympiad, the continental federations of Europe, Africa and the Americas decided to transfer some of their Olympiad qualification places to continental competitions. In total, 17 Open World Cup places and five Women’s World Cup places were reallocated under this provision in FIDE’s regulations.
This keeps several routes to qualification open. An Olympiad result helps a national federation earn a place, while continental competitions allow players to compete for qualification directly as individuals.
Who Will Play in the World Cup?
The published lists identify the federations that have earned places. They will nominate their representatives later, choosing from the members of their Olympiad teams.
If every player on a team has already qualified through another route or declines to participate, the federation may nominate another player of its choice. Representatives are expected to be confirmed between July 1 and July 15, 2027.
For fans, the focus now shifts to the nominations: who will receive each hard-earned place? The decision will be particularly interesting in countries where several strong players could be in contention.
The Olympiad Is Over, but Its Story Continues
Team competitions turn individual contributions into a shared result. One player wins a decisive game, another holds a difficult position, and a third delivers a crucial point when the team needs it most.
The allocation of World Cup places gives those efforts lasting significance. Samarkand is now behind them, but for some future World Cup participants, the road to the 2027 tournaments began there—with games played for their team.
