Baku Open 2025: Where Chess Meets Culture by the Caspian Sea

A tournament that feels like a festival. A stage where intellect, heritage, and ambition converge.

On April 28, the iconic Baku Crystal Hall opened its doors to chess fans from around the world for the launch of Baku Open 2025 — and what a launch it was. With nearly 700 players from 16 countries, the air in Baku is filled with tension, talent, and tactical brilliance.

700 players. 16 countries. One spirit.

Divided into Sections A, B, and C, each a 9-round Swiss tournament with classical time control, the festival brings together seasoned grandmasters, rising prodigies, and passionate amateurs. The total prize fund? A solid $55,000, with $12,000 for the winner of Section A.

Chess here is not just a game. It’s a performance, a tradition, a dialogue across borders.

Azerbaijan and Turkey: A Strategic Alliance

At the opening ceremony, a major cooperation agreement was signed between the Azerbaijan Chess Federation and the Turkish Chess Federation, witnessed by FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich.

This partnership includes joint national team training camps, referee certification programs, and new development projects — a smart move to expand chess infrastructure and shared knowledge across the region.

Battle of Champions: Titles Clash, Legends Rise

One of the most exciting side events is the Battle of Champions:

  • 🇦🇿 Rauf Mammadov faces 🇺🇿 Rustam Kasimdzhanov,
  • 🇦🇿 Gunay Mammadzada challenges 🇧🇬 Antoaneta Stefanova.

The format mixes rapid and blitz, and after three rapid games, both Azerbaijani champions lead 2–1. The stage is set for high drama and bold ideas.

When Chess Invades a Museum

The Battle of Champions kicked off at a truly unique venue — the National Carpet Museum of Azerbaijan. Director Amina Malikova reflected:

“This is the first time an international chess event is held in our museum. Chess is seen as a symbol of high intelligence. May our carpets inspire our players.”

Dvorkovich added:

“This is where sport and culture merge. A perfect place for chess.”

A Masterclass by a Champion

On April 27, former World and European Champion Antoaneta Stefanova led a masterclass for 20 young Azerbaijani talents. She shared her story, broke down strategic concepts, answered questions, and left every participant with certificates and gifts — but more importantly, with fire in their eyes.

Why Baku Open Matters

  • For Azerbaijan: It reinforces the nation’s chess legacy and leadership.
  • For the chess world: It sets an example of how to blend professionalism, inclusivity, and cultural beauty.
  • For the players: It’s a place to shine, grow, and compete on an international stage.

Follow the moves. This is just the beginning — and the best games are yet to come.
